Motivation is the Key to Quitting Smoking

Regardless of what you use to quit smoking, without motivation your chance of success is greatly and for some completely diminished. Simply put without motivation, kicking your habit isn’t going to happen.

So many people try to quit for all the right reasons, health, money, appearance, but the majority lack the mindset to ensure success.  We all know that the effort required to stop smoking is far from easy but many also don’t truly want to quit.

Avoiding pain and seeking pleasure is human nature.  The addiction to cigarettes, or more appropriately, nicotine makes you feel good and the interruption of the supply of nicotine has a tremendous potential for pain.  The fact of the matter is you have the decision to face the pain now, or exponentially greater pain later.  Cancer and other smoking related health problems pale in comparison to the immediate discomfort experienced when quitting smoking.

Desiring to quit and having the motivation to carry it out is the only way to be sure you are successful.  If one or both are missing from the equation, spend your time, money and effort accomplishing something else until you have both to focus on quitting smoking.

Put a plan together and familiarize yourself with it to the point that you feel confident you can succeed.  When you’re ready to insert the motivation to follow the plan through your chances of success are much greater.  When you are ready, and only then, will you be successful.  Don’t let external influences decide when you are ready.

At the same time, external support will be a necessary mechanism to be successful.  Set a date to start, (or stop really), and let others know what it is that you are trying to accomplish so that they can offer support structure.  Friends and family will understand when you apologize ahead of time for being gruff and difficult during the quitting process.

It is important to be specific in setting a schedule and plan of action.  In doing so you are training your brain that there is a plan and you will need to follow a schedule. You will have more success if you set timelines with goals, and stick to it.

The bottom line is that you’ve got to have the motivation and desire to stop smoking cigarettes.  Coupled with a plan and the right mindset, your chances of succeeding are tremendous.
