Are You Addicted to Smoking?

It is amazing to me the number of people that cannot or will not admit to being addicted to Smoking. In fact owning up to the addiction is the first step in kicking the habit once and for all. It has been said that there are three obstacles to overcome the addiction, the first being habit.
We as humans are no doubt, let’s say, habitual in nature. When you do something over and over, a habit forms and habits are extremely hard to break regardless of their nature. Habits are made of two components, psychological and physical, these being the remaining two obstacles that must be overcome when quitting smoking.
All of us have said at one time or another, “I can quit smoking any time I want.” If you’re like me and you have tried to stop, you know it obviously didn’t work and are probably still smoking. The fact that you have tried, even though unsuccessful, makes you a winner so to speak, not a failure. It’s easy to feel as though you failed if you started smoking again, but that’s just not the case.

Seems to them that if you wanted to stop, you would just stop. It is impossible for someone who has never smoked to understand the dynamics of the addiction. It’s important though not to blame yourself, or feel like you don’t have enough will power and simply stop trying to quit smoking. The reason for not being able to stop lies not in your inabilities, but rather in the cigarettes themselves.
People with exceptional will power and strength find that the nicotine is extremely addicitve and find themselves unable to stop smoking just like everyone else.
The only time anyone is able to stop smoking is when they are truly ready to quit. Not just say they are ready but actually believe they are ready. It is at this point and this point only that you can stop smoking.
When you decide it’s time, addressing the habit by providing an alternative to the fix that cigarettes provide is key number one. Secondly understanding the triggers to your habit, both emotional and situationally will further ensure your ability to finally quit the smoking habit.
The bottom line is that what’s stopping you from quitting is not you. Blaming yourself for the inability to quit does nothing to help. Understanding that the nicotine is truly the culprit, will allow you to shift your attention to interrupting the habits that will ultimately allow you to stop smoking for good.
